As the economy grew in the 1970s there was an increasing demand for doctors. In particular, sending doctors to areas where there were none at that time was a major goal for the government. Therefore, the government established a plan to set up 34 new medical universities, which included 17 public, 16 private and one university medical college. Kanazawa Medical University was set up in Uchinada, near Kanazawa City, in June 1972, as the first private medical university on the Sea of Japan side of the country.
