Legal Medicine

Outline
The Department of Legal Medicine resumed forensic autopsies in 2007 and expanded its operations in 2011, when a new forensic autopsy room was completed in the Anatomy Center. In July 2015, Professor MIZUKAMI Hajime was appointed as the sixth chair of the department and has continued to lead autopsy work since then.
In cooperation with judicial authorities, the department now conducts approximately 60 to 70 forensic autopsies annually, not only for Ishikawa Prefecture but also for Toyama and Fukui Prefectures. Through these activities, we contribute to the judicial system, public health, and public welfare.
Our current research themes include: genetic analysis of drug-metabolizing enzymes in individuals with a history of drug intake; genetic analysis of sudden unexpected death and the elucidation of its onset mechanisms; and development of a novel postmortem diagnostic method for fatal hypothermia.
